Protected Characteristics - Equality
At our school, we know that every child is unique. Children come from different families and cultures, have different identities and abilities, and grow up with different experiences that shape who they are.
These differences are part of life, and they deserve to be understood, help with, and respected. They are also protected in law, which means everyone has the right to be treated fairly and with dignity.
To help children understand this in a clear and positive way, we use the mnemonic RAISED.
RAISED helps children understand that differences between people are a normal and valued part of life. It supports them to recognise that everyone has the right to be treated fairly, with dignity and respect. Through RAISED, children learn why some aspects of who we are are protected, and why unkindness, exclusion, or discrimination are never acceptable. They are encouraged to listen to others, show empathy, and challenge unfairness in age-appropriate ways.
This approach supports our wider work on equality, safeguarding, and British values. It helps children feel safe being themselves, while learning how to be respectful and responsible members of a diverse school community, preparing them to become thoughtful, informed citizens of the future.
